CCU LOS ANGELES CHAPTER (HEADQUARTERS WORLDWIDE)

Coal City USA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public benefit organization located in SouthBay, Los Angeles county, California. We engage in activities in the areas of eliminating homelessness and provide youth leadership and educational support programs, skills development, and committed to community integration, practices and policies that better the lives of all people.

Surprisingly, the number of homeless people in Los Angeles News, sport and opinion from the Guardian’s US edition | The Guardian has jumped to a new record, as city official’s grapple with a humanitarian crisis of proportions remarkable for a modern American metropolis.

We have a horrible humanitarian crisis in Los Angeles where the government has been unable, because of various legal maneuvers taken against them, to enforce local laws as it pertains to people sleeping on the streets. Not only sleeping on the streets, but also anything that they accumulate while they’re on the streets also can’t be touched because that’s “their belongings”. Even if it’s a schizophrenic who’s rolling his or her stool up into balls and saying, “that’s my belongings.” At Coal City USA, we are committed to making a world of difference. We work to create community-driven programs with solutions that empower and aim to alleviate the soaring homelessness problem in Los Angeles County. We build resiliency through innovative, environmentally conscious, and transformative projects.

Our work

Essentially, our esteemed members and volunteers do whatever is needed. Proper nutrition is essential for the prevention of many chronic diseases, such as heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and several types of cancer. In addition, inadequate dietary intake and malnutrition, specifically under-nutrition, can lead to decreased bone mass, impaired wound healing, reduced cognitive function, and many other ill effects. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes that all foods can fit into a healthy diet, but some must be consumed in moderation and in proper portion sizes. In order to prevent chronic disease and promote optimal health, diet should include a wide variety of foods complete with fruits and vegetables, whole-grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein. Therefore, these food groups should be emphasized over foods with a lower nutrient density, such as highly-processed foods, fried foods, candies, and sugary beverages.

Our palliative

With good welfare and palliative packages, meal planning and preparation by our Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), we provide balanced diets which contain the necessary proportions of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins as well as the recommended daily allowances of all vitamins and minerals. Dietitian Nutritionists are CCU members trained to provide individualized education and therefore have the potential to positively influence the nutritional quality of meals served at homeless shelters. In effect, food safety and sanitation and safe food access are given the highest levels of priority. Education however, for homeless population is important, providing nutrition education specifically to the individuals preparing the meals has a greater impact on the dietary intake of meal guests. In addition, nutrition education throughout organizations donating food to homeless shelters is prevalent. RDNs members of Coal City USA are able to develop educational materials to guide members and volunteers in preparation of healthy meals.

We also provide clothes, blankets and tents to the homeless and in the wake of Covid-19, we supported families with food bags and when the media spotlight moves on, we don’t. CCU is structured to stay and help whole communities lift themselves out of poverty for good. In 2019, over 1000 homeless people died. We already have 400 dead homeless people in Los Angeles so far in 2020 The Homeless Are Dying in Record Numbers on the Streets of Los Angeles. We all know how quickly that could click to 10,000 or more. A troubling trend: Coronavirus-related deaths doubled in L.A. County over last week How many have to die before we do something?

Our proposal

Coal City USA Los Angeles aim to engage the youth at risk with leadership programs, giving hope, social and economic change to the less privilege. We faithfully believe in reaching across the needy, voiceless agonized populace and be a source of material help and support to unemployed and unskilled, abused children and orphans and the elderly among our community.

Physical Exercise programs

The initiative and mission of CCU Physical Exercise Program is to provide pro bono preventive and wellness physical therapy services to poor and undeserved children, ages 6-17 and their families in the local community diagnosed with or at high-risk for diabetes and conditions associated with physical inactivity. As part of a defined community service, CCU will focus on effective personalized and structured nutritional, physical exercise and activity related education for children in collaboration with their families to enhance aptitude and potential for durable and long-term lifestyle change.
