Community Outreach

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Coal City USA as a nonprofit organization, took it as a commitment to engage and be relevant to the community that we are located in. By becoming an active member in the local area, not only have increased the recognition of our organization, but we have also meet the people that make up the very community we operate in. These people are our very direct base of volunteers and donors, and we need to recognize them and appreciate their efforts in supporting our cause.

Purpose of Community Outreach

Create Mutual Beneficial Opportunities

The key to engaging with the local community is to make sure that our activities are mutually beneficial for community members and the organization. To get people engaged, it is important that people feel fulfilled for their effort, so whether we are working with a volunteer or with students doing a service project, we make sure to know what is important to them and what will make them proud.

Be A Partner For Our Community

One of the key reasons why CCU engages local communities is to integrate and understand the issues that affect them the most. As an organization, if a goal is to increase volunteer ranks and/or giving, the community must view us as a partner that will be there long term with their concerns in mind.

Participate In Local Events

Many cities and areas offer local events – such as festivals and community events that involve local businesses and nonprofit organizations – so this is a great place to get a booth and get to know the community. It raises awareness and provides a face for our organization. We can share takeaway contents to help those we met remember CCU and come back to our online presence to learn more about us and to know what we represent (aims & objectives).

Encourage Discussion To Forge Relationships

At CCU we may not know it all or have every answer but we certainly can have a “PhD,” aka “Passion to have a Discussion.” By putting ourselves out there and having discussions with a wide range of community leaders and stakeholders, we are able to find opportunities that align with what they are telling us matters to the community. This ultimately creates deeper relationships both in terms of money, time and services.

Our outreach methods

Summer Arts

Last summer Coal City USA funds, organizes, and teaches a one-week arts program made available to underprivileged children living in the South Bay. The classes are always full of eager children between 5 – 14 years of age, ready to create their own piece of original artwork. Parents are interested about the program because it provides a safe and positive place for their children during the summer; a place away from the influence of local gang activity and recruiting. The program is free to all children.

Day of Service Projects

Organized volunteer projects when approximately 15-20 Coal City USA members, along with family and friends where appropriate, work to complete a project in one day. These projects could include cleaning a beach, painting or refurbishing a building, or planning a party for underprivileged children.

Back To School Shopping Day

On September 7, 2019, we hosted our 1st annual Back-to-School Shopping event at Sam’s Club in Gardena. The event benefited more than 20 underprivileged youth in the South Bay. Each pre-selected child was referred by local nonprofit partner agencies and paired with a member of Coal City USA who assisted them with selecting and purchasing school clothes, uniforms, shoes and supplies valued at over $150 per child.

The main support of this program was made possible by The Infinite Foundation Inc, who provided staff for the event, and gave our shoppers additional Sam’s Club coupons.

Fun Christmas

There is nothing cuter than seeing the excitement on a child’s face while they tear into gifts early on Christmas, especially when CCU have picked out something that they absolutely love. Although choosing what to get our children can be somewhat overwhelming, given that there’s a seemingly endless amount options when it comes to children’s gifts, there are a few tried and true options that are sure to put a smile on children’s face.

On December 7, 2019, we hosted a fun Christmas at the Lawndale Community Center (Main Event hall), CCU rounded up dozens of gifts for over 150 children of all ages and interests. Children are music lovers, aspiring doctors and scientists, or budding jewelry designers, our gift ideas are guaranteed to make the children’s holiday extra special.

And the best part of all, the majority of these gift ideas are under $45, so you won’t have to break the bank come Christmas time to support us to celebrate with our children.
